Pour Over & Brewing

AeroPress

A pressurised immersion brewer that finishes in a minute

Brew stage
AeroPress — illustrated reference plate
Specification
What it doesCombines immersion and a gentle hand-generated pressure, pushing the brew through a thin paper disc in about a minute.
GrindMedium-fine for a standard brew, up to espresso-fine for a concentrated shot-style recipe.
RatioVery wide. Standard is around 1:12 – 1:15; concentrated recipes go far shorter and are diluted afterwards.
TimeOne to two minutes total, which is why it is the usual travel and office answer.
FilterThin paper discs, or a reusable metal disc for more body.
Two stylesThe standard upright method and the inverted method. Inverted gives more control over steep time; upright is faster and less prone to spills.

Overview

A tube and a plunger that push a small, strong brew through a thin paper disc. Fast, forgiving and effectively unbreakable.

Pour OverEspresso
Safety

Inverting the press means holding near-boiling water upside down. Do it over a stable surface, keep a hand on the plunger, and never press down on an inverted press before it is flipped.

What actually goes wrong

  • Rinse the paper disc to seat it in the cap and remove paper taste.
  • Stir gently three or four times, then press slowly — a hard press channels.
  • Lower water temperatures (80–85 °C) suit darker roasts well here.

What it has to match up with

  • Hand grinder
  • Coffee scale
  • Paper or metal discs
