Backflush Disc

Blind basket that forces detergent back through the group

Maintain stage
Backflush Disc — illustrated reference plate
Specification
What it doesSeals the portafilter so no water escapes, forcing the pump to push water and detergent backwards through the group head, solenoid and shower screen.
Blind or ventedA fully blind disc does the deep clean. A vented disc lets some water through and is gentler — some machines require it.
FitsMatched to the machine: 58 mm, 54 mm, 51 mm. It replaces the basket, so the size must be exact.
RoutineWater backflush after every session; detergent backflush weekly or monthly depending on use.
Machine compatibilitySome machines (many thermoblock models, most lever and manual machines) must not be backflushed at all. Check the manual first.
AfterwardsAlways finish with a plain-water flush and pull a sacrificial shot you throw away.

Overview

A solid disc that fits the portafilter in place of a basket. It blocks the flow, so water and detergent are forced back up through the group valve and the shower screen.

Espresso
Safety

Backflushing forces hot water and detergent backwards under pressure. Follow the machine manual exactly, never backflush a machine that is not designed for it, and keep hands and face clear of the group during the cycle.

What actually goes wrong

  • Check the manual before the first detergent backflush — some machines will be damaged.
  • Use a detergent made for espresso machines, not dish soap.
  • Always finish with a clean water flush and throw the first shot away.

What it has to match up with

  • Group head brush
  • Espresso cleaning tablets
  • A machine rated for backflushing
