Group Head Brush

The daily brush that keeps the group head honest

Group Head Brush — illustrated reference plate
Specification
What it doesScrubs loose grounds and oil out of the group head, off the shower screen and out of the gasket groove, after every session.
BristlesStiff nylon, cut short enough to scrub without splaying. Natural bristles soften and hold odour.
Head shapeA round or fan head reaches the group head; some brushes have a narrow spade end for the gasket groove.
HandleLong enough to keep the hand clear of hot metal, and a material that survives hot water.
What it does not fixBackflushing. A brush cleans the surface; detergent backflushing cleans the passages behind it.
FrequencyDaily, at the end of the session, while the group is still warm — oil comes off far more easily warm.

Overview

A stiff-bristled brush sized to reach into the group head and around the gasket. The cheapest way to stop old coffee oil building up.

Espresso
Safety

Brush the group head with the machine off and the group cooled enough to touch, and never put a hand inside the group while the machine is powered on.

What actually goes wrong

  • Brush while the group is warm — oil lifts instead of smearing.
  • Scrub the gasket groove too; that is where the black residue hides.
  • Rinse the brush itself and stand it bristles-down to dry.

What it has to match up with

  • Backflush disc
  • Cleaning tablets
  • A machine you can switch off
