Descaling Solution

Removes the scale that quietly narrows the machine

Descaling Solution — illustrated reference plate
Specification
What it doesDissolves mineral scale — mostly calcium carbonate — from the boiler, thermoblock, valves and shower screen.
How scale hurtsScale insulates the heating element (unstable temperature), narrows the water passages (slow flow, poor pressure) and can eventually block them.
IngredientsFood-safe acids — citric, tartaric, lactic or sulfamic. Citric is common and effective but can be aggressive to some seals at high concentration.
FrequencyDepends entirely on water hardness and use. Hard water plus daily use can mean monthly; soft water might mean every six months.
RinsingThe critical step. Rinse and flush far more than feels necessary — residual acid in the first drinks is both unpleasant and a health concern.
Not for every machineSome manufacturers void warranties on third-party descalers, and some machines should be descaled professionally.

Overview

An acidic solution that dissolves the calcium carbonate left behind by hard water. Scale changes temperature stability and flow long before the machine stops working.

Safety

Descaling solution is an acid. Wear gloves, ventilate the room, never mix it with bleach or another cleaner, and keep it away from eyes and skin. Flush the machine thoroughly before drinking from it again, and keep the bottle out of reach of children.

What actually goes wrong

  • Descale before the machine starts misbehaving, not after.
  • Use filtered water afterwards and you will descale far less often.
  • Flush with at least two full tanks of clean water, then discard a shot.

What it has to match up with

  • A machine the manual says may be descaled
  • Filtered water
  • Gloves and ventilation
