Mixing Glass

A heavy glass for stirring drinks that should stay clear

Serve stage
Mixing Glass — illustrated reference plate
Specification
What it doesHolds spirit, modifier and ice while you stir. Stirring chills and dilutes without shaking in air, so the drink stays clear and silky.
What goes in itAnything that is all spirit or spirit plus a clear modifier — a Martini, a Manhattan, a Negroni.
What does notAnything with citrus, egg, dairy or syrup belongs in a shaker.
WeightA heavy base keeps the glass still while you stir. A light one skates across the counter.
SizeAround 500–700 ml so a two-drink stir has room for ice and movement.
PrechillingFill it with ice and water while you gather ingredients, then dump it. A warm glass dilutes the drink more.

Overview

A thick-walled glass that lets you stir a drink with ice and strain it, without the aeration a shaker adds.

Cold Brew
Safety

Thick glass full of ice and spirit is heavy and slippery when condensation forms. Keep the counter dry, hold the glass at the base, and do not stack mixing glasses.
