Specification
What it doesNeedles are stirred through the loose dose to break up clumps and distribute the grounds evenly before tamping.
Why it worksA grinder throws clumps and fines. Tamping compresses those clumps as they are, leaving dense and loose patches. Water takes the easiest path — that is channelling, and it is why one shot runs fast and tastes thin.
Needle diameterAround 0.3–0.4 mm. Thicker needles push the coffee around instead of separating it; much thinner ones bend.
Needle countFour to ten is a practical range. More needles mean faster work but a wider tool that is harder to move in a small basket.
Needle tipsBlunt or rounded tips. Sharp tips scratch the basket coating.
TechniqueStir in small circles from the bottom up, then level the surface. It should take five to ten seconds, not thirty.
Effect on grindA dose that was clumping often behaves like a finer grind once distributed, so expect to adjust slightly.

Overview

A handle holding a cluster of fine needles, stirred through the dose before tamping. It breaks up clumps and levels the bed, which is the most common cause of channelling.

Espresso
Safety

The needles are thin and easy to bend or to catch a fingertip. Store the tool with the needles down in a stand, and do not leave it loose in a drawer.

What actually goes wrong

  • Stir before tamping, never after — you cannot redistribute a compacted puck.
  • Work from the bottom of the basket upward to avoid leaving a dense layer at the base.
  • If your shots improved dramatically, the problem was distribution, not the machine.

What it has to match up with

  • Basket of any size
  • Distribution tool
  • Dosing funnel
